(Czechoslovak Exhibition of Poster and Promotional Graphics)的組織,1964年擧辦第一屆展覽,由Jiří Hlušička (The Moravian Gallery館長 1929-)和設計師Jan Rajlich Sr. (1920-2016)一同創辦,致力於推廣平面設計。

(Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava),1991年Jozef Dóka Jr. 創辦第一屆斯洛伐克海報三年展Trnava Poster Triennial (TPT),讓全世界看到斯洛伐克海報設計。

After the end of World War I in 1918, the Austro-Hungarian Empire disintegrated, the Czech Republic and Slovakia merged into one independent country-the Czechoslovak Republic with Prague as its capital. In the 1920s, Avant-garde emerged in Europe and each European country interpreted into different art forms—such as Constructivism in the Soviet Union, Futurism in Italy, De Stijl in the Netherlands, Dadaism in Zurich and Berlin, Purism in Paris, Bauhaus in Weimar Germany and Devětsil in Prague. The representatives of Czechoslovakia's Devětsil include Karel Teige (1900-1951) and Ladislav Sutnar (1897-1976). Karel Teige had experimented with new fonts and typography, and published “Život” to promote Devětsil. He taught in Bauhaus in Dessau Germany during 1929-1930.

n the mid-19th century, posters became an important publicity medium of marketing. Artists like Henri Toulouse Lautrec (1864-1901) from France, Gustav Klimt (1962-1918) from Austria, and Alfons Maria Mucha(1860-1939) from Czech took part in poster design, making posters an important medium for integrating art and business. The posters reflected the life and aesthetics of that time while the poster wall turned into the street art gallery. At the end of the 19th century, Art Nouveau pervaded Europe. In 1887, Mucha came to Paris with his art of seductive nudes accentuated by the delicate curves of inflorescence and became the paragon of Art Nouveau bringing great influence to the history of art.

“Brno International Biennial of Graphic Design” is one of the oldest and most important event in the field of visual communication worldwide. The First Czechoslovak Exhibition of Poster and Promotional Graphics was organized in 1964 in Brno by Jiří Hlušička(the head of Moravian Gallery 1929-) and designer Jan Rajlich Sr. (1920-2016) to promote graphic design. In 1968, the first secretary of the Czechoslovak Communist Party, Alexander Dubček launched the “Prague Spring” to fight for economic and democratic reforms. The Soviet military repressed the revolution. Although the democratic revolution failed, other reforms in cinema, literature, music, and craft continued. The development of the Czech cinema in the 1970s also led to the great variety of design of Czech cinema posters. Although the printing quality was not the best, the works were original. The most representative figure was Ziegler Zdeněk (1932-).

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Prague was eager to get rid of the influence of the Communist Party and the Soviet Union and launched the “Velvet Revolution.” The revolution succeeded in putting an end to the era of the one-party dictatorship of the Communist Party. The progression of economic reforms and democratization resulted in the official disintegration of Czechoslovak Republic in 1993 and Czech Republic and Slovak Republic became independent of each other. Slovakian designer Vladislav Rostoka (1948-) and Jozef Dóka Jr. (1948-2011) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. Jozef Dóka Jr. founded “Trnava Poster Triennial (TPT)” in 1991, making Slovakian poster designs known worldwide. Designer Vladislav Rostoka's poster works with their surrealistic content had gained many international exposures and he became the most representative designer from Slovakia. Czech designer Aleš Najbrt (1962-) has great passion for graphic design. In 1994, he was the artistic director of “Reflex" magazine and editor of the cultural magazine “Raut.” The contents of “Raut” magazine reflected the atmosphere and underground cultural thinking in Prague during that time. Najbrt was invited to the Brno Biennial this year to hold his solo exhibition manifesting his great influence on graphic design.

The Czech Republic and Slovakia joined NATO in 1994 and 2004 and both joined the European Union in 2004. Although the Czech Republic and Slovakia are rather small countries, they’ve had dazzling development economically among the 10 countries of Central Europe. In the new digital era, economic development drives the budget of advertising, marketing, publishing, and cultural enterprises so as to raise people's attention to design. The development of graphic design also invigorates type design. In 2009, Radim Peško founded RP Digital type foundry, and in 2014 and 2016 he was the curator of The Brno International Biennial of Graphic Design. More and more Czech and Slovak designers went to the Netherlands, France and the UK for further study bringing new ideas to slowly change the graphic design thinking of the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
