120 years of French graphic design

Ateliers d' Art

Concept Area - 120 years of French graphic design

The French still prefer the term " graphisme" over " design graphique," which although formally more accurate, has encountered resistance -no doubt because it sounds Anglo - Saxon. However, the precise meaning of the term " grapheme" is more difficult to define.

The arts of Japan became highly prized after the Universal Exhibition of 1867, and interest in Japanese prints reached its peak with the 1890 exhibition of its master artists at the Paris École des beaux-arts. Henri de Toulouse -Lautrec (1864-1901) adopted the techniques of this art form-asymmetry, flat areas of solid colors, and thick contour lines defining surfaces and explored them in their designs for posters, and books and magazine covers, which added a new dynamic to the relationship between the text and the image.

The "Art Deco" style dominated the 1925 International Exhibition of Decorative Arts, and apart from the exhibition poster by Charles Loupot (1892-1962) and A. M. Cassandre's (1901-1968) works ect. A. M. Cassandre, who was convinced that the future of typography was linked to that of architecture, persuaded Charles Peignot (1897-1983) to tackle the design of a typeface that would be in keeping with modern architectural conceptions and the development of poster art.

The first exhibition of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI), entitled " L'Art et La publicité dans le monde," was held at the Musée des Arts décoratifs in 1955, and gathered designers from eleven countries. The exhibition space was designed by René Herbst (1891-1982) : the first room was organized according to country and designers, the second according to public interest and brand campaigns.

Roger Excoffon (1910-1983), Art director for Air France, redesigned the company's name in 1958, with the assistance of José Mendoza (1926-), his first assistant at the Olive foundry. Using these new letters, they drew up the Nord typeface of capital letters, produced by the Olive foundry and used for Air France graphic elements.

In 1969, Pierre Bernard (1942-2015), François Miehe (1942-), and Gérard Paris-Clavel (1943-) who had actively contributed to the poster workshop at the ENSAD in 1968 founded the Grapus collective with a view to creating " social, political, and cultural images." Grapus began to work with the Val-de-Marne federation of the French Communist Party, creating poster campaigns and participating in the design of layouts and equipment for events. the influences crystallized in the mid-1970s, resulting in the highly pictorial " Grapus style", which made considerable use of handwritten scripts.

Starting in 1983, the Visual Design/ Jean Widmer (1929-) studio created the signage for the Musée d'Orsay, with the contribution of Bruno Monguzzi (1941-). It then took on the task of defining the visual identity and institutional documents. The use of the initials "M" and " O" was the defining elements of the establishment's image.

From 1995, M/M Paris (Mathias Augustyniak (1967-) and Michael Amzalag (1968-)) became particular involved in the worlds of fashion and music publishing, where they could display their taste for spectacle while making fun of its fall from favor. M/M Paris raised editorial graphic design level of the artistic act," clearly claimed as such.

The French fondness for the romantic touch in graphic creation need not suffer as a result of this. Rather than taking refuge in a mythical realm, in search of hypothetical artistic consecration, designers who are not afraid to confront romanticism with the triviality of the world will find a way to revitalize the spirit of graphic design.

Golden Pin Area - Ateliers d' Art

In the last quarter of the 19th century, the European world had made giant strides: the popularization of the film industry, the modernization of Haute Couture, Impressionism, Barbizon School of Painting, Art Nouveau, Salon Culture, etc. During this prosperous time of social humanitarian, cultural, and artistic development, today's contemporary French culture took its form and furthermore, makes in all aspects impact on people's life worldwide.

Coming to the 21st century Taipei, with eyes on design, arts, and humanity, let us savor the French culture from the Belle Époque till present time.

There is a red line running through the lives of these designers and artists which is related to France, may it be the motherland of birth place, the land where the uninhibited youth was spent, a piece of family migration history, or a reluctant romance. Numerous fascinating stories are behind each piece of work.

Being touched by the esprit of Chanel, Anne Lai collects the memories of the old days, trying to represent those glorious past.

Pursuing study in France has enabled Pei-Shu Lee, co-founder of Yin Taiwan, to discover her own worth and eventually cultivate fruitful results.

With the oriental calligraphy blood coinciding with the manga & animation spirit, Cony Lin found her stage in Place Vendôme in Paris.

Every move he takes, be it the knife or the spoon, flows like smooth musical notes. YLWT is made up of architecture, music, and art.

In the Golden Pin exhibition area, we invite each creator to tell his own story, showing the deeper and broader content behind the works. The exhibition takes form of the Open studio to represent the work on-site, so that we can glimpse the creators at work, experience their attitudes to life, get in-depth understanding of their achievements, and feel the inseparable realation between art and daily life.
