Every year, the French competition celebrates the best designed books published during the previous year in French. It honors the traditional craft of the modern book and the innovation, the quality of the production and the design. The goal is to improve the quality of the books in French and encourage publishers.

Above all, the competition seeks to create a forum between" book workers" to think about and react to the book as a true object of creation. Despite the arrive of e-book readers , we think that the tradition book remains a great medium for creation. It's not about being nostalgic or pastiest. We need a silent object unique, designed according to its specific content, " eternal, and autonomous. The competition is here to reaffirm the position of the book as an object for the future and as a way we consume modern culture.

Sophie Nicolas and Julien Magnani were students at Estienne in Paris when we founded an independent association, Les plus beaux livres francais, to launch the competition in France. Deeply attached to the book, we discovered that many competition were organized everywhere in Europe. First , we contacted the French Ministry of Culture, which welcome our project and financed us. Then we contacted the German and Swiss organizers, who offered us their support. In 2007, Sophie Nicolas was invited by the international competition in Leipzig to be a juror. There she learned the best way to evaluate the books. When she returned in France, we made the rules of the French competition together.

We made calls to them all during the French" Salon du Livre" book fair in Paris(2007) and received 400 books Etienne Robial accepted to woke with us and became the president of the jury. We were proud to work with him. His strong experience and his generosity was a great asset for the competition.

Fewer than 30 books were selected the first year (2008) An exhibition took place at the Galerie Anatome in Paris, and or association published a catalogue. The exhibition was a great success in France, and the professionals recognized it immediately. So the Ministry of culture financed us the second and third year before the department of the book was closed in 2010.

Change is good

Rik and José met in the year 2000 in Paris and started to work together on projects. In 2003 (untill 2005 together with Stefan Ilkovics) they decided to work under the name ‘Change is good’. With no particular style in mind every project is approached in a different way. Trying to explore different fields ‘Change is good’ is presently designing books, identity projects, way finding systems, posters, record covers, websites, art performances, giving lectures and organising workshops. José and Rik are former teachers at the School of art and design of Amiens.
